“Three cabinet finishes is a lot,” admits Stephanie Brown, principal of her eponymous design studio. She credits the trio of cabinets in this kitchen to Peter Rose Architects, who collaborated with Brown and her team on this modern farmhouse-style home in Vancouver.

Stephanie Brown Kitchen - Janis NicolayA super-functional black-and-white kitchen was the best pick for this family of four, but the designers took care to keep it warm and inviting (especially for the two children). “That’s accomplished through the wood and the leather stools—it’s not too formal, it’s still casual and durable,” says Brown. But thanks to a consistent palette, the three different finishes are incorporated seamlessly: the white cabinets match the white countertops, the black cabinets suit the graphic stone backsplash and the warm wood cabinets complement the saddle-leather bar stools. “Repetition is the reason that it works,” says Brown.
