Gilded ceramics and leather goods and illustrated tea towels galore.
For the third instalment of Etsy‘s annual home-grown talent marketplace pop-up extravaganza, the online e-commerce site is taking its main event from downtown’s Robson Square to North Vancouver’s Pipe Shop—here are just a few of the local makers that more than justify the trip.(Side note: The Pipe Shop building in North Van is a beautiful industrial warehouse with plenty of windows, wood beams and twinkly lights right in Lonsdale Quay—we just had our Designers of the Year party there last week!—so that’s sure to take the edge off the SeaBus.)
When you pair white porcelain pots and mugs with hand-painted metallic embellishments in geometric designs, you’ve officially got my attention (and dollars probably also). Each piece is under $50.
The Vancouver leather company’s mainstay is simplified, turn-of-the-century-style accessories like basic belts, minimalist wallets, keychains and flasks, but I’m equally intrigued by these rugged, campfire candles ($30 each) that sport the leather label and promise notes of tobacco and vanilla, sandalwood and lavender. Camping without the camping.
As macrame returns with a braided vengeance, we’ll see more and more makers roll up to craft fairs and fleas with increasingly intricate and sophisticated iterations of the ’70s planter trend: case in point, Saige and Sky with its ornate braid designs and bead work. Single planters start around $30, while the top set of four goes for $180 (plus owner and expert macrame-ist Jolynn Vandam periodically offers workshops too).
This is only a small snippet of the vintage and kitschy prints G and T Design has gracing its neutral table and pillow linens. There’s also super on-trend pineapples, shark illustrations and camper vans—plus she (Vancouver’s Stephanie McRae) also does custom work. Napkins range from around $24 to $30, and pillows are $58. Don’t forget your moneys!
