When you’re a performer, you’re pretty much always either gearing up for a big show, or winding down from one. So it’s essential to have spaces in the home that can be inspiring and exciting during prep time, but also act as an oasis from the world when the spotlight turns off.
This playfully glam Edmonton ensuite does just that for a homeowner in her 30s who works as an opera singer, vocal coach and event planner. “She has a strong work ethic, has a no-nonsense approach with her students, but is a child at heart,” says designer Amanda Lwanga of Linger Design Studio of her client, who loves classical opera and late-night dancehall music in equal measure. “The master bedroom ensuite was a place where she could indulge in some self-love and self-care, but also get ready with proper illumination both during the day and at night.”
The placement of the mirrors in front of the windows allow for natural lighting, while still maintaining privacy. A Hollywood Regency inspiration is clear here, between the retro-cool metallic sconces from Anthropology and a glam mix of black, white and gold, but there’s plenty of playful modern touches to be found, too. There’s the colourful abstract prints from American artists like Cody Hudson (“Cry no More” ) and Heather Day ( “Junk Yard”); the on-trend hexagonal mirrors from West Elm; the graphic marble stripes in the shower (a combo of Venato and Nero Marquina from Prima Stone).
And of course, there’s the polka-dot wall treatment from Urban Walls, which also carries into the bedroom. “Often, clients are open to entertaining bold concepts during sample selection, but it takes an exceptional level of trust to commit to them in a larger format,” says Lwanga. “Providing our client with high-resolution renderings calmed their nerves and was a catalyst for 100-percent buy-in.” Together, it’s a bold, glamorous look that embodied the homeowner’s love of texture and pattern, and provides a place to either ramp up or retreat, surrounded by beauty.
