There’s a lot to love in this Kamloops home, but for designer Tanya Wassen, principal of Spot On Interior Design, it’s the entryway that earns top billing. “There were so many details that brought the different trades together to create this ‘touchdown zone,’” she says.

Walk in the pivot-hinge front door, and you’re instantly taken in by the soaring wood-beam ceilings and double-storey window that overlooks the golf course and the Kamloops Valley.

“It really creates a wow factor when you enter the house, and then you get this nice view of the slat ceiling and view to outside,” says Wassen. “It kind of encapsulates the whole thing in one shot.”

The foyer is gorgeous, but ultimately, it’s the gateway to enjoying the rest of the three-storey home. Pop down the statement-making black-and-glass stairs to find the bedrooms, kitchen and living area (including a theatre room!); head up, and you’ll reach the thoughtfully appointed office and a state-of-the-art home gym.

Warm finishes like beautiful oak millwork keep the modern space feeling cozy, while black frames outline the views like paintings. (These triple-pane windows are tinted to reduce the heat of the southern sun.) It’s all in service of creating an indoor-meets-outdoor vibe for what the homeowners call their ‘forever home.’

Kitchen

KitchenWith an elevator installed to help future-proof the space for aging-in-place, it’s poised to be just that.

As owners of a building supply shop, the homeowners had access to a wide range of resources—good news for Wassen. On the hunt for natural, textural elements and details, she stocked up on tiles for a double-storey stone-and-plaster three-way fireplace and lined the ceiling with artful wood details.

Quartz countertops and hardwood floors, meanwhile, offer understated elegance.

The primary bedroom rocks a high-end hotel vibe, with a built-in millwork bed and recessed uplighting. In the ensuite, a cleverly designed compartmentalized shower offers a traditional multi-head experience on one side and a steam shower on the other. Large format tile amps up the luxury.

In the top-storey office, navy millwork lines the walls to provide storage for paperwork, and transitions to support a kitchenette.

Top to bottom, it’s a home that celebrates casual comfort in style. No wonder the project nabbed Spot On a Keystone Building Award. “It’s a special place,” says Wassen.
