HGTV Canada Mainstage

You name it, Karla Dreyer’s got her name in it. This interior designer, TV design host and magazine editor has been featured in many esteemed publications (we’ll mention Western Living is one of them, and we’re totally not biased). Dreyer’s presentation on Friday is on “Finding Your Design Style”€”you have one, even if you don’t know it. “Everyone does have a dominant design style,” says Dreyer, “and finding your design style is really the number one thing in creating a home that you connect with.” Don’t get distracted by your neighbour’s steampunk shower or those BOGO glitzy side tables€”if cowboy-cool is your design style, giddyup.

Lilydale Cooking Stage
Friday, October 25 at 4:00 p.m.

Raveena Oberoi is hot off her Food Network premiere on The Big Bake, but her love for sharing her baking knowledge and tips is only growing.  “I love to bake because to me, it’s therapy. Sharing baking knowledge allows me to feel like I am bringing some joy into others’ lives,” says the Surrey local and owner of Just Cakes Bake Shop. She’ll be making apple caramel mousse on the cooking stage, giving audiences advice for a modern twist on classic fall flavours as well as killer presentation tips.

Sunday, October 27 at 2:00 p.m.
Whether you’re a regular HGTV fan or someone who rarely tunes in and then randomly binges 12 hours of Love It or List It (guilty), you’ve probably heard of design superstar Sabrina Smelko. The owner of Bri design studio will be sharing her advice for creating a happy, holistic home on the main stage this weekend. She shared with us some Vancouver-specific advice for small-space living: “Go vertical, recess everything you can, and look between the studs! There’s generally more than a foot of space between wall studs, so consider building in open shelving or slotting in a skinny cabinet or niches.” She also suggests using mirrors to reflect light, having minimal furniture, and choosing matching fixtures for harmonious homemaking.

–¢ SMÅ(ll) Styled by Alison Mazurek

Show Floor

This brand-new showcase aims to prove that great things come in small packages. SMÄ(ll) is presented by Ikea and styled by Alison Mazurek, who you might know from her blog 600 Sq Ft and a Baby. Despite being told that a growing family meant moving out of her 1-bedroom Vancouver apartment was inevitable, Mazurek managed to adjust her own 600-square-foot home to house all three€”and now, four€”members of her family. She’s partnered with Ikea for SMÄ(ll), another 600-square-foot space that showcases how you can live large with just a little space. So yeah, we’ll be getting our storage tips from her.

–¢ DOGUE

HGTV Canada Main Stage
Saturday, October 26 at 3:00 p.m.

Four words: Rescue dog fashion show. We’ll elaborate, not like it’s necessary: the DOGUE fashion show features rescue pups strutting their stuff in Barking Babies’ luxury canine apparel. Do dogs need jackets? Not really. Do we need to see dogs wearing jackets? Absolutely. The fashion show is in support of Thank DOG I Am Out, a local organization that rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes adoptable dogs that are at risk of being euthanized, surrendered, abused, or neglected. All of the dogs on the catwalk (I’ll be here all week) have been successfully adopted through the organization.

Check out these picks and more at the Vancouver Fall Home Show this weekend.
