Designers show us how to warm up our homes with clay, cowhide and cacti.
Spring hasn’t even arrived yet, but if you’re anything like us, you’re already dreaming of hot, dry (!) destinations. To channel the desert vibe, WL chatted with seven Western Canadian designers to find out how they’re bringing Arizona-inspired style to the home. The trend has slowly been gaining momentum (is there anyone who doesn’t own an air plant or succulent these days?) and we’re bound to see more once summer arrives.
“These planters from Brooklyn artist Helen Levi bring together five earthy tones of clay that evoke the warm, natural materials of the desert landscape. And they are just perfect for holding a little collection of succulents or cacti, which, let’s face it, no desert space would be complete without.” —Sarah Ward, Sarah Ward Interiors
“Ceramic arts and desert weather go hand-in-hand. Dipped and glazed in a Navajo-inspired turquoise blue and you’ve got yourself an accent table perfect for your southwestern-inspired interior. I like that its material and texture is clearly taking some design cues from Navajo/desert/southwestern style, but its simple silhouette instantly keeps it classic and versatile. Throw this into a modern room or a maximalist, regency-style space and it’ll blend right in.” —Dexter Dolores, Dexter Dolores Interiors
“Cowhide gives the classic director chair a rebellious personality.” —Karin Bohn, House of Bohn
“This edgy ox head will add interest and a rustic element when incorporated on your gallery wall.” —Kathleen Lin, The Cross Interior Design
“I love the handmade feel of this! It’s very washed out and feels like it’s been faded by the desert sunshine.” —Jamie Banfield, Jamie Banfield Design
“Textural toss pillows were a big item showing at this year’s Las Vegas Market. Beads, fringe, chunky woven wools and jute all lend to a textural trend we will see a lot of in 2017.” —Jennifer Heffel, Heffel Balagno Design
“This area rug is a steal, and an easy way to inject the modern-desert vibe into a room setting. And the corner tassels are whimsical and fun.” —Stephanie Brown, Stephanie Brown Inc.
