Strings of lights are being pulled from the closet, children everywhere are writing page-long lists to Santa and red cups have been on the streets for what seems like forever. Yes, Christmas is right around the corner—and our regular decor is quickly being replaced with holiday accessories and an all-important centrepiece: the Christmas tree. From faux to fir, strung with lights and ornaments, there are a million ways to decorate your tree. Interior designer Janie Hungerford uses gold ornaments as an accent piece on an otherwise neutral tree. Because the area rug in the living room is red, Hungerford didn’t want to overdo it by adding more red (or green); the combination of white and gold make for an eye-catching piece that screams “winter wonderland.”
Calgary blogger and interior decorator Neelam Gurm went outside the box and opted for a lighter and simpler birch tree, rather than the traditional fir or spruce. With West Coast-inspired decorations, a two-tone Christmas tree not only creates a unique festive look, but allows for a vivid blue area rug to stand out in the home. Designer Carrie McCarthy’s white-on-white Pender Island cabin plays host to one of the most unique trees we’ve ever seen: a coastal driftwood Christmas tree stands tall in the corner, creating a balance between richness and simplicity.
Nature and simplicity are the focal points in Ami McKay‘s mid-century Christmas cottage, where homemade pompoms adorn a pared-down Christmas tree. Even with minimal decorations, the tree acts as a centrepiece in the room thanks to natural lighting from the panelled windows.
