The luxury brand expands to homewares and furnishings with a new store back East (but don’t worry, there’s an online shop too€”and they deliver to Western Canada).

When Hermès opened its doors at 100 Bloor Street West, in Toronto at the end of November, those yearning to pick up a signature orange Pippa chair or an oak Rééditions Jean-Michel Frank par Hermès dining table could finally do so. Conceived by Parisian architecture agency RDAI, the stunning new two-story location introduces Hermes furniture to the Canadian market, as well as their wallpaper and textiles lines “I think it’s long overdue,” says Jennifer Carter CEO and President of Hermes Canada. “This larger space allows us to showcase each métier in a unique way. We cannot sell furniture unless we can show it and we couldn’t do that before.” Inside the new 6,000-square-foot Hermès store in Toronto.Due to an opportunity that couldn’t be beat (the closure of the former Williams-Sonoma store just down the street), it made sense to build from the ground up. At approximately 6,000 square feet the new shop is a contemporary expression of the house of Hermès. “There are some distinctive elements which are the signature of the house, such as the overall aesthetic of the store, the use of warm cherry wood, rich leather handrails and the Hermès ex-libris patterned floor tiles set within the familiar Faubourg mosaic of our flagship store in Paris,” explains Florian Craen, executive VP of sales and distribution. “But we also take a lot of effort to make each store unique. In the Toronto store we played with the dramatic element by utilizing a ceiling height of more than 33 feet, allowing not only for a lot of natural light but also for the installation of an impressive oval staircase.”Although the boutique is spacious it manages to maintain an intimacy with dedicated quarters for each of the expanded métiers, including silks, leathers, jewelry, fragrances and homewares in addition to men’s and women’s wear. And naturally with a house steeped in equestrian heritage saddles, equestrian tack and wear are also prominently displayed in the mix. Understated elegance, the guiding principle to the house of Hermès is also apparent in the plush private salon, the first of its kind in Canada. Done entirely in lacquer with sliding pocket doors allowing for total privacy, clients can try on the latest fashions, shop with friends or simply take a break while waiting for their purchases to be wrapped. And although Hermès does not produce any product exclusive to one store, there are some hockey sticks, a nod to Canadian culture, which were custom-created for the opening. With its stunning new location, an expanded range of choice and addition of their furniture line the store was packed with eager clientele opening day. “I have to tell you,” laughs Carter. “I want to go shopping here. I am seeing products that I didn’t even know we had because we now have the space.”
