Though we’re barely halfway through 2018, the colour experts are already looking ahead and predicting the hottest hues for next year.

We know, we know: it’s August, and we should be thinking about end-of-summer pool parties and not 2019 trends. But in the magazine world, we’re always looking ahead (we legitimately are in the middle of planning a Christmas-party photo shoot as we speak) so the new year—and new trends—don’t really feel so far away. With that in mind, we’ve collected a few colour picks from the pros for 2019: the palettes you’ll likely be seeing everywhere in the not-so-distant future. One thing all of these predictions have in common? The embrace of rich, powerful hues.

PPG Paints declared Night Watch the definitive shade for 2019—a luxurious shade of deep green that pulls from the current interior-design obsession with plants and nature. “The dark green hue pulls our memories of natural environments to the surface to recreate the calming, invigorating euphoria we feel when in nature,” says Dee Schlotter, PPG senior color marketing manager.

Behr Paint, meanwhile, just announced its own colour of the year for 2019: Blueprint. It’s a mid-tone blue that’s slightly warmer than denim, yet softer than navy—a colour that’s welcoming and homey. “Blue signifies authenticity, confidence and timelessness,” says Erika Woelfel, vice president of colour and creative services at Behr. “This universally appealing hue provides a steady stream of positivity and is poised to be an instant classic for years to come.”

Pantone hasn’t selected its official Colour of the Year quite yet, but its released a home and interiors trend forecast with eight palettes it predicts will be dominating the home decor world next year. One eye-catching collection? “Cravings,” a mix of flamingo pinks, rich purples and spicy reds.

What’s clear is that colour is coming back in a big way for 2019 and beyond. Whether you’re ready to go all-in with a fresh coat of paint for every room and a new forest-green sofa, or want to mix things up with a few key accessories in that bold blue, it’s the perfect time to take a break from minimalism and embrace a little colour into your life.
