If you haven’t yet discovered Calgary-based AdrianMartinus’s sustainable designs, you and the rest of the world soon will. The brother duo of Martinus and Adrian Pool just took home Grand Prize in the second annual Etsy’s Design Awards€”and we couldn’t be prouder of them.

The pair craft colourful sideboards, coffee tables, bowls and more out of recycled skateboards. “Our design approach has always been influenced by figuring out what we can do with what we have,€ Martinus told Etsy.

The Stackton Credenza

This year's Grand Prize Winner was their Stackton credenza. €œThis piece is so beautiful and at first glance, you would never know that It's actually made out of recycled skateboards€”how cool is that?€ said judge Drew Barrymore. €œThe design is so sleek, and I really appreciate the functionality of the sliding doors and adjustable shelves.€

The prize comes with a $15,000US cash reward€”and plenty of well-deserved attention.

We’ve long been fans of the duo (they were named our 2015 Ones to Watch for our Designers of the Year), and designer Kevin Mitchell selected AdrianMartinus’s work for the installation we designed for IDS Vancouver in 2018€œI found them on Instagram years ago, and I bought all their crib boards€”they€™re all so unique and I didn€™t know what I wanted, so I just took them all,” he told us. “They work with recycled skateboards in their designs€”they€™ve taken essentially trash and made it into treasure.€

From all of us at Western Living, a huge congrats AdrianMartinus! You can read more about their work on their Etsy site.
