A duel between two smooth operators.
We spoke with Calgary designer Kevin Mitchell to get his take on two iconic plastic chairs—the Eames Eiffel, and the Panton—for March Madness. The History: A highly successful iteration of the Eames Organic chair, the Eiffel chair is so nicknamed for its signature Eiffel Tower-esque metal base. You’ve seen these Charles Eames designs in every colour and in every kind of home. Another designer captivated by plastic, the Denmark-born Verner Panton wanted to create a super comfortable one-piece design, and came up with the Panton Chair for Vitra in 1967.
PROS: It’s available in many finishes so you’re bound to find something that works with your colour palette. Great for family homes as it can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Also moderately priced and light weight.
CONS: Often impersonated, so be sure you’re buying the real deal.
PROS: It’s a single piece of polypropylene construction, so there’s no need to worry about it falling apart. Easy to clean. Playful styling adds whimsy to an interior.
CONS: Limited colour selections available.
